7 Kitchen Design Ideas

Filed under: Do Your Room — Tags: , — Staff @ 10:35 am

Kitchens have evolved a lot over the years. Once found only in the rear of the house, today’s kitchen design takes the kitchen out the background. The challenge for kitchen design is in creating a more open-faced kitchen, that is part of a dining area, a family room or a great room.

In deciding on how to design your kitchen, you must take into consideration such things as: will your kitchen have an island? Will it be of a modern or traditional design? What kinds of appliances will you need for your new kitchen design? What kind of lighting design?

1. Kitchen as ‘Great Room

Whether you are redesigning an existing kitchen or planning a new kitchen in a new home there are some design considerations to keep in mind, such as including in an island or peninsula as part of the kitchen design. These can be used to connect the kitchen to a nearby dining area or family room thereby creating a ‘great room‘. A kitchen island or peninsula will allow the cook to keep in visual and conversational contact with family members or guests in the adjoining family or dining room.

2. Create a Kitchen Canopy

To give the kitchen some visible borders without blocking views create a kitchen canopy. Also a high ceiling in the kitchen can create the perception of spaciousness.

3. Using Kitchen Cabinet Color to Set Tone of Kitchen Design

Kitchen cabinets will help set the tone for the whole room. The choice of wood will influence the overall look of your cabinets. To create a light look, use a light wood such as ash, beech, birch, oak, maple, or chestnut. For medium range, select cherry. To darker kitchens, choose wood that has some color to it.

4. Plan Out Use of Cabinets and Drawers in The New Kitchen Design

Plan out in the kitchen design blueprint just how your cabinets and drawers will be used and how much space and storage you will need before you start your new kitchen design. The first thing to examine is the counter surface area. Look at where you put everything in your existing kitchen and where in your new kitchen design will these things will go in the new space. Will there be more than one person cooking at a time. If so, will there be enough room for two cooks in the kitchen to work together?

5. Use The Galley-Type Kitchen Design

As for counter arrangements, many kitchen designers agree the galley-type design to be the best in terms of efficiency with it’s single aisle and counters to either side, making it easy to turn around to go from sink to cooking range.

6. Under-Cabinet Kitchen Lighting

Kitchen lighting can be an overlooked area of kitchen design. Even if the kitchen has generally good lighting, the counter areas can be somewhat dark. For these areas under-cabinet lighting can help provide more light to work in. By using simple spots or fluorescent lights a smaller kitchen can be made to look larger.

7. Looking at Countertops

Granite, marble, and limestone are all popular natural materials for use in countertops are available in many colors. Ceramic tile kitchen countertops are versatile, practical, and also available in many colors, as well as many shapes, patterns, and finishes. Solid surface countertops provide seamless acrylic faces. Solid surfaces also come in almost limitless colors, patterns, and styles, and are stain and heat resistant. Laminate countertops are more affordable but not built to last. Concrete countertops are known for versatility, as well as strength. Wood countertops are long lasting and easy to clean and repair but the wood will not withstand exposure to water and household chemicals. Stainless steel countertops lack the elegance of granite or tile. These countertops do not absorb stains, but tends to scratch easily.

Home Security: How to Make Your Own Safe Room

Filed under: Do Your Room — Tags: — Staff @ 12:42 pm

Defining the Safe Room

A safe room, also known as panic room, is an ultra-secure location within a building designated to provide shelter for a family during burglary, terrorist attacks or other unspecific threats. If you have ever seen a movie called “Panic Room“, with Jodie Foster in the leading role, you probably have a distorted idea about it. In the movie, the safe room seemed to be unattainable for those with lower incomes. Hi-tech devices and steel walls made the room look more like the vault of a bank than a temporary refuge that the regular homeowners can afford. While such highly fortified panic rooms really exist, it’s generally rich people that use them, to store money or valuable jewelry, art collections, secret documents and so on.

Creating Your Own Safe Room Is Not as Difficult as It Seems

For most people, a safe room is a temporary retreat where the members of the threatened family can hide and call for help. This room doesn’t necessarily need steel walls, but a fortified door that opens outwards. The door can be made of massive wood, steel or other materials, the point is: it’s difficult to break. The doorjamb should be made of steel as well, or reinforced with steel, to avoid the door from being kicked open.

The safe room should have no windows. Any window can easily become an “entrance”. You wouldn’t want to give intruders secondary options, would you? Make sure to keep in the room any necessary supplies you need for self-defense or to call for help: a mobile phone and its charger, first aid kits, water and food, defensive weapons and, as the above mentioned movie has shown us, sick people can have panic attacks while hiding in the safe room, or they might simply need to take their medicine while the intruders are still in the house. It is always wise to store in the panic room such medical emergency supplies as well.

As you never know how long you are going to be locked inside the safe room, always consider good ventilation, proper lighting and basic hygiene needs.

Family Survival During Home Invasion

Home invaders are not movie characters. They are a real threat. We all hope that housebreak will never take place, but no matter if you live in a bad neighborhood or not, it might happen. In such a case, cooperating with the burglars is the last thing you should think about or do.

If you have a safe room you should always make sure that all the family members know how and when to use it. Instruct your children about the importance and the purpose of the room. This room should never be their playground.

Make sure that the emergency cell phone is regularly charged and the flashlights have new batteries. Keep the keys to open the safety room inside. While inside, under siege, call the police and do not exit till they arrive. Again: do not cooperate with the burglars. Don’t take their word if they promise once you come out you will be safe. Wait inside for the police.

Decorating Your Living Room – Selecting a Style

Your living room should be decorated in your own personal style, not that of a decorator. The living room is usually the first room that your guests see so it is usually a little more formal than the rest of your home. It should also reflect the style preferences of your family members.

There are many decorating styles that you can choose from. The most popular are traditional, country, contemporary, and transitional. You probably prefer one style over another. If you don’t think that you have a style preference, look through some magazines and catalogs to see which ones you like. While you are looking, also look to see which color schemes you like best.

When I decorate a room, I try to mix and match furniture. I do not like to purchase furniture as a suite. I believe that this makes the room look boring and unwelcoming.

For instance, if you like the traditional style, choose pieces of furniture that can build that look for you. By choosing furniture a piece at a time, you will come up with a unique look that is all your own. Use your ingenuity and imagination to create a rare look that reflects your own style. This can be easily done on a limited budget.

Let’s talk about some of the different styles:

Traditional Style

Traditional decorating covers many periods and can include furniture designs from the very elegant to those of the more simple American tradition. You can find good reproductions that look as beautiful as the hard-to-find antiques.

Accessories are more elaborate. Portraits and paintings have double matting with carved or gilded frames. Tables are made of dark wood and have a good number of accessories and floral arrangements. Lighting in the room emphasizes the warmth and richness of the furnishings.

Country Style

Country decorating is informal and cozy. It can be more romantic, like an English cottage, or spare like a Shaker farmhouse.

Antique furniture is usually handcrafted and fabrics are plaid, tweeds and prints. Accents include quilts, old toys and dried flowers.

Contemporary Style

A contemporary style is more dramatic. The furniture is usually low profile and sleek. Simplicity is key in a contemporary living room. Low furniture arrangements are used to give the room and open and uncrowded feeling.

Room accessories usually include one-of-a-kind art pieces that are dramatic and colorful. Indirect lighting is deflected from the ceiling and walls and can add to the drama of the contemporary living room.

Transitional Style

Transitional decorating brings furnishings from different eras together. This creates a room with a unique flair and is usually not limited to just one style. Window treatments are more simple, and often, window treatments are not used at all. Furniture is larger and has simple, straight lines to compliment smaller pieces that have soft, curved lines.

Room accessories are limited to just a few outstanding pieces. Use recessed lighting to keep it low key and to feature architectural fixtures for drama.

Whether you are decorating the entire living room, or simply just sprucing it up, you need to start with a plan. Get your inspiration from books and magazines and by visiting different high-end furniture stores. Decide on your basic style and color scheme and go for it!

Dining Room Art

Filed under: Do Your Room — Tags: — Staff @ 9:37 pm

When you think of dining room decor, what comes to mind? Chances are you will think about the dining room tables and chairs, possibly a china cabinet, and all the china and silverware that will have to go on the table to create a family place setting for a meal. But there is much more to this space than just the table and it’s accents.

While, of course, a dining room table is about dining, setting up a whole dining environment takes more than just a table, chairs and a few plates. This is where tapestries can come in, creating a backdrop environment for your dining area.

If you have decided on a still life food theme to go with your dining room, you may be able to find art that fit into this theme. Many art pieces have been created with the image of beautiful pieces of still life art such as vases and bowls of fruit. If these are the type of decor you have decided to put in your dining room, having a beautiful painting of one of these pieces of art can suit the scene perfectly.

Color and softness can be brought into your dining room by adding floral works. If you want the space to always look fresh and bright, you may want to look for a tapestry that depicts a bouquet full of spring blooms that seem to burst from the wall and lighten the whole room.

Don’t stop at just the floral ones, though. If you want to create a complete look you should try to find real floral arrangements to add to your dining room table that match your tapestries and really bring all that color and brilliance to life.

While many people think that art work is meant to hang on the walls of living rooms and hallways, there are endless places in the home where tapestries can add a bit of color and flair. The dining room is one such place. The right use of pieces in the dining room can either enhance your current decorating plans, brighten up this space to make it a more festive environment or give you a window to the outside to enjoy in the comfort of your own home.

See Tom Mattherson’s reviews of mythical art pieces as well as these older art works that help decorate your home.

How to Plan and Design a Bedroom Fit for a Teen

Filed under: Do Your Room — Tags: , — Staff @ 2:15 am

It’s time to turn your kid room into one fit for a teen. But where do you start?

First of all you need to evaluate the space you have in terms of size and shape. The best way to do this is to empty your room completely.

By emptying your bedroom of its contents you can also evaluate the condition of the walls, floor, windows, doors and trim.

Regardless whether you’re redecorating from top to bottom or just applying a fresh coat of paint and adding in some new curtains, the job is made a lot easier when your bedroom isn’t filled with stuff.

Putting a plan to paper is the best place to start. Sample furniture arrangements are much easier on paper than physically moving things around to see what works and what doesn’t.

Creating a place for personal grooming in your teen bedroom will continue to benefit you for years to come. While some family’s have large enough bathrooms where everyone has their own space for grooming and storing toiletries other families do not, so creating a grooming area within your room is a great idea provided you have the space.

A small but well-lit vanity table and mirror in a corner of your room is a great way to maximize available space. A vanity table doesn’t have to be large to be useful. It can also be as simple as a wide shelf positioned low enough to be used when seated.

If you do have the space to incorporate a place for grooming in your teen bedroom you’ll need to make sure there are adequate receptacles for small appliances like hair dryers and strengtheners. In addition to a small mirror on your vanity table consider incorporating a full length mirror so you can check your overall appearance. Full length mirrors can be either free standing or mounted on the back of your bedroom door.

What about a workspace? If you’re like most teenagers you’ll need a comfortable but functional area to do homework in. Consider incorporating a computer station or homework desk but remember to take into account the space required for any related equipment like a printer or an extra storage unit for homework supplies.

Once you’ve decided on what areas of your teen bedroom will be used for what you’ll want to consider any new furnishing items you wish to incorporate.

Even one new or refurbished piece of furniture can change the entire look of your bedroom.

Be sure to take lots of room measurements and take your notes and your tape measure with you when shopping for new furniture.

When looking for bedroom furniture it’s always wise to consider items that offer lots of storage such as desks with multiple drawers and armoires and shelving units that can hold both books and baskets.

For more teen bedroom planning tips please visit How to draw a teen room design floor plan. Sherrie Le Masurier is co-owner of www.teen-bedrooms.com, a website offering organizing and decorating tips for teens.
